Exercise and Fitness Tips

Are there obstacles that keep you from being physically active?

small weights and jumprope We all know that exercise provides many benefits to us, ranging from decreasing our risk for diabetes and heart disease to improving our quality of life.  However, most of us are so busy with our lives and taking care of our family that we often neglect to find time for ourselves.  If you feel that you have obstacles and you are feeling lost as to how you can stay active, here are some solutions to get you jump started:

Obstacle:  I don’t have time to exercise:  Solution:  Pull up your calendar and write down your schedule for the week.  Pick a time slot that you can fit in 15-30 minutes of activity.   Some recommended activities that can be done at home include:  Xbox/Wii fit; exercise DVDs with activities that you can do right under your own roof; you can even use resistance band to tone your body while watching your favorite TV shows.
Obstacle:  I’m so tired when I get home from work:  Solution:  Schedule physical activity for times in the day or week when you feel energetic.  Almost all patients admit when they exercise in the morning, they have more energy throughout the day.  Get used to going to bed early, it is worth it!
Obstacle:  I have so much on my “to do” list already, where do I find time to exercise? Solution: Plan ahead! Make physical activity a regular part of your daily or weekly schedule by writing it on your calendar. Keep the appointment with yourself just as you would with your doctors.
Obstacle:  I have to take care of my kids!  Solution: Trade babysitting time with a friend, neighbor, or family member who also has small children. As children get older, family bike rides or walks might be another option.  Remember, you can’t take care of your children unless you have good health.
Obstacle:  My job requires me to be on the road, it is impossible for me to exercise. Solution: Look for a place you can stay that has swimming pools or fitness facilities, or you can bring your exercise DVDs and pop it in your laptop.

And remember, exercise doesn’t mean you have to get on the boring treadmill or join the gym.  Find something you enjoy doing like zumba, boxing, or even have a weekly Wii night with the family.  Not only does it help you burn calories, but you can also cash in on some quality time with your family.
