Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Laparoscopic gastric sleeve resection surgery, also known as vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG), is an exciting weight loss surgery option that combines many of the advantages of both laparoscopic gastric bypass and the LAP-BAND® System. The DFW Bariatric Institute is one of the few bariatric surgery practices in Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas to offer patients four different options for surgical weight loss. Our doctors believe that laparoscopic gastric sleeve resection, or Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy, is an excellent choice for patients who decide that the other types of bariatric surgery may not quite meet their treatment needs.

The gastric sleeve procedure has been proven to be an effective operation for many individuals who don’t want the anatomic alteration of gastric bypass, nor a plastic insert, like LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding surgery. The Laparoscopic Gastric Sleeve Resection

Gastric sleeve resection, or vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG), was originally part of a much older operation called the biliopancreatic diversion. This operation allows a patient to lose a significant amount of weight.

Through a few small incisions, the DFW Bariatric Institute surgeons will use a stapling device to permanently remove 75 – 80 percent of the volume of the stomach. The result is a slender tube in the shape of a banana that maintains the natural openings leading to and from this new tubular “stomach.” No surgery is performed on the intestines. This is all performed through a scope and minimally-invasive techniques. Because the intestines are not re-routed, patients do not lose too much weight or suffer from severe vitamin deficiencies.

What Laparoscopic Gastric Sleeve Resection Accomplishes

Laparoscopic gastric sleeve resection (vertical sleeve gastrectomy – VSG) at our weight loss surgery practice accomplishes the following:

Laparoscopic Gastric Sleeve Resection

  • Since 75- 80 percent of the capacity of the stomach is removed, a person can only eat a few ounces at a time.
  • As with laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery, research has shown that the hunger hormone (ghrelin) is greatly reduced after surgery. Researchers feel that this aids in the satisfaction patients appear to have with small amounts of food.
  • It can cure Type II Diabetes 75% of the time.
  • It is also an excellent operation to achieve cure for high blood pressure and sleep apnea.

Christy’s Weight Loss Success

Gastric Sleeve Surgery

“In 2010 I went to an amusement park and my niece asked me to ride a Rollercoaster with her. When we got on the ride my safety bar would not latch down because my legs were too big. I was asked to remove myself from the ride. That was a wake up call kind of day.” — Christy

Advantages of Laparoscopic Gastric Sleeve Resection

Gastric Sleeve Resection Advantages

  • Laparoscopic gastric sleeve resection is simpler than gastric bypass surgery. Unlike gastric bypass, this procedure does not re-route the passage of food.
  • The procedure is less likely to cause complications such as the malabsorption of vitamins.
  • It allows for weight loss similar to what is experienced with gastric bypass surgery.
  • It allows females to conceive and deliver healthy babies.
  • Most insurance companies cover this procedure.
  • It can cure obesity related diseases like Diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea.
  • Because of significant weight loss, patients will find tremendous relief from back pain, hip pain, knee pain, and foot pain allowing them to walk and exercise more.
  • Many gastric sleeve surgeries involve same-day discharges and do not require an in-patient hospital stay. Our bariatric surgeons have often performed this procedure on an outpatient basis.

Disadvantages of Laparoscopic Gastric Sleeve Resection

  • Rare complications can include blockages in the gastric sleeve or post-operative leaks from the staple line. Experience matters and the DFW Bariatric Institute is committed to performing these procedures with maximum attention toward minimizing risks.

My knees, which were in sad shape before surgery, don’t hurt anymore. I joined a gym and participate in water aerobics and a latin impact aerobics class. My whole life has changed. I have much more confidence in myself and love to be with people."

Lost 110 pounds*

“I am currently 29 years old and weigh 130 lbs. Before surgery I weighed almost 240 lbs…This is the best thing I have done with my life and would do it again today. It changed my life drastically. My surgeon said to me, 'I can do 50% for you and give you the surgery, but the other 50% is up to you. Your eating, your exercise, your total outlook on life make up the other 50%. And what you want from the surgery is what you will get, and the life you will gain.'”

“There are no words to express the amount of change that weight loss surgery has brought to my life. I am a 54 year old female. There were so many things I was unable to do before the surgery that I blamed on age. It wasn’t my age at all, it was the weight. I am 30 again…The day of my surgery, I weighed 299 pounds. Today I weigh 138 and wear a size 6…I feel so good about myself now. The surgery saved my life!”
