My Weight Loss Story
I have always been a big guy. I was never obese as I exercised regularly. As I grew older I exercised less and gained more weight. I am tall 6’2” so I always looked lighter than I was. A few years back I lost my brother to a car accident. This life event hit me really hard. I started to eat to make up for the pain and loss that I was feeling. I was out of control. I would eat to just eat, to have something to do. My health started to decline. I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol and my joints were always hurting. I snored horribly, it got to the point I could not share my wife’s bed. I went and had a sleep study only to find out that I needed a CPAP mask just to sleep. My health was spinning out of control. I am a Operations manager at The Home Depot. I am on my feet for many hours a day while working 10-11 hour shifts. My knees were killing me by the end of the day. My feet would throb for hours after I got home. I was feeling horrible. My health was affecting my family life as well. I was not very happy. I would yell and argue at the smallest of events. I was not happy and it was starting to take its toll on the home front.

In February of 2014 I weighed myself one morning and the scale read 379! I could not believe it. On this same day I was walking around at work and I was feeling bad. My joints ached, I was out of breath. I walked by a mirror in our break room and I did not recognize the person looking back at me. I had become a overweight, grouchy, unhappy and unhealthy person and I was about to turn 50 years old. I have a family of 3 kids and a beautiful wife and I was miserable. I decided to make a change. I started to do research. I would go to the internet and search for weight loss solutions. As you can imagine there are many choices and procedures to choose from. The next day as I was driving to work, I was listening to a local sports radio show and the host mentioned the team at DFW Bariatric. I had seen the name and so I jotted down the number and made an appointment. I met with the staff and felt like I was in the right place. I decided on the sleeve as I wanted something that could not be reversed and something that was going to be life changing. I am the type of person that once I set my mind on something I go after it hard. I lost almost 59 pounds before the procedure. The hardest thing of this entire process was the liquid diet and the changing of my mindset. I had to make a change. Dr Holden did my procedure and I am so thankful for that.
I have since lost 161 pounds. I am currently off ALL of my meds and I no longer need a CPAP machine to get a good night’s rest. I can work my shifts without hurting. I can see that my family looks at me differently. They know I am healthier and that I have taken the steps to be with them for many years to come. I am so much happier with myself and my life. I am not that grouchy old man anymore. I am a vibrant father and husband. I love my second chance and I will not let anything take over my life again. Food no longer controls me I control it. My breaking point was seeing our family pictures and looking at the scale and seeing the numbers 379…Yikes!!
I am a happier and healthier person. I look on to my future with enthusiasm. I am a better husband and father, a better manager and a better person. I can ride my motorcycle without any pain and loss of breath. I am proud of the person who looks back at me in the mirror. I am proud that my lifestyle change has been so supported by my family and friends. I am proud that I can tell my story and hopefully help someone who is in the same place in life as I was just last year. I got a second chance and I am going to take advantage of it!
